The St. Mary’s
County Department of Aging offers and delivers Home Delivered Meal
services (Meals On Wheels/MOW) to the citizens of St. Mary’s County in
accordance with Maryland Department of Aging (Maging) Program
directives. Residents are determined eligible for home delivered meal
(HDM) services based on the requirement set-forth in the Directives
which states, (in part), “Home delivered nutrition services shall be
available to any person age 60 or older who is homebound by reason of
illness or incapacitation…”
Using a state
standardized scale/format, Department of Aging staff meets with the
applicant to assess his/her ability to perform standard activities of
daily living and develops an overall score for the applicant.
The Meals On
Wheels (MOW) program provides clients with a mid-day meal that may be
either hot or frozen. Hot meals are delivered when a client cannot
prepare a frozen meal and when they live in a location that is served
by a hot meal route. Hot meals are usually delivered by volunteer meal
drivers.
Frozen meals are
delivered to program clients who are able to properly prepare the
frozen meal
and who do not live on an established hot meal route. Frozen meals are
delivered in five-meal packages by a Department of Aging driver.
Each MOW client
also receives a package of shelf-stable meals that do not require
heating or other preparation. These meals are intended to be kept in
reserve by program clients for use on those occasions when normal meal
delivery cannot be made.
