Michael L. Hewitt is serving his first term as a Commissioner of St. Mary’s County. He represents Commissioner District 2, the Hollywood-Leonardtown area. He was born in Maine and moved with his family to St. Mary’s County in 1963, later graduating from Great Mills High School and St Mary’s College of Maryland. After college Mr. Hewitt started working in the family business, Hewitt’s Service Center in Lexington Park. After his father’s sudden death in 1981, he became President of the family business and continues to own and operate it today.

Mr. Hewitt married his college sweetheart, Elaine Pappas of Baltimore, Maryland, in 1977. They reside in Hollywood, Maryland, along with their Jack Russell terrier Butler, and have two children, Matthew and Kristina, a son-in-law, Nathan Thompson, and one granddaughter, Madalynn Rose. Matthew has a PhD in Bio Physics and Physiology from the University of Alabama-Birmingham and works in Horchow, Pennsylvania for Galleon Pharmaceuticals as a Senior Scientist. Kristina is a graduate of Marymount University with a dual major in Criminal Justice and Forensic Physiology and works at NAS Patuxent River supporting the XB-47 program. She and her family live in Hollywood, MD.

Mr. Hewitt was appointed to the St Mary’s County Planning Commission in 1994, elected to the St Mary’s County Board of Education in 1996, and in 2001, was appointed to the St Mary’s County Zoning Board of Appeals. From 1991 to present, his service to the community includes the Board of Education’s Budget Advisory Committee, Audit Committee, Ethics Committee, and Health and Human Services Committee. In 1998 he was appointed to the Maryland Route 235 Focus Group, and from 2000-2006, served on the Calvert County Marine Museum Board of Governors in Solomon’s MD. From March 2011 to December 1, 2014, he served on the Board of Directors for the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum.

Mr. Hewitt’s civic involvement includes membership in BPO Elks Lodge #2092, twice as President, three times as Officer of the Year, and twice as Citizen of the Year. Other memberships include Thomas J. Shyrock Masonic Lodge #223 and Fraternal Oder of the Moose Lodge #2393, both in Hollywood, Maryland. The Hewitt family is a member of St John’s Catholic Church in Hollywood.
