The State of
Maryland will send you one of the following after processing your
state tax credit application:
-
A credit directly on
your July 2008 property tax bill if the application is received
before May 1, 2008, or
-
A tax credit certificate
to be used towards payment of the tax bill or for a refund if the
bill has already been paid; or
-
A written letter of
denial stating the reason for ineligibility.
A new
application must be filed with the State of Maryland every year if
you wish to be considered for a state tax credit.
To
apply for the St. Mary’s County Senior Property Tax Credit, you
must submit a properly completed
tax credit application, proof of your age (such as a
copy of driver’s license or birth certificate), and the
confirmation copy of the state tax credit received. County
tax credit applications can be obtained by calling 301-475-4473,
or by visiting the Treasurer’s Office in Leonardtown
Upon receipt of
your completed application, the St. Mary’s County Treasurer’s
Office will verify your information and generate a tax credit
equal to the state credit received but not exceeding your
remaining tax bill/liability. If your property is transferred
during the tax year, all of the Senior Tax Credit received will
need to be repaid to St. Mary’s County. A new application must be
submitted each year.
