The
Agriculture and Seafood Division serves as a clearinghouse and resource
for information concerning the county’s traditional agriculture and
seafood economies. The Division works to stabilize, promote and enhance
this sector by promoting products, encouraging a diversify of products
and markets and support efforts to preserve the rural nature of the
county. The Division formulates, designs and implements comprehensive
development programs for the county’s agriculture and seafood
industries. Under the auspices of the Agriculture, Seafood and Forestry
Commission and the Agricultural Land Preservation Advisory Board,
recommendations are made to the Board of County Commissioners to
stabilize, promote and enhance the agriculture and seafood economic
base.
The Agriculture
Development Specialist works under the direction of the Agriculture,
Seafood and Forestry Commission and the Agricultural Land Preservation
Advisory Board with direct supervision provided by the Director of the
Department of Economic and Community Development.
The Division serves
as a liaison to the community, distributing informational material and
coordinating efforts to stabilize and diversity the agriculture and
seafood industries. Immediate goals include increasing participation in
the Maryland Agriculture Land Preservation Program and strengthening the
county’s Rural Legacy application which are both designed to protect the
county against the impact of sprawl development. The Division will
continue to sponsor and co-sponsor workshops and meetings for farmers
and watermen regarding relevant and time production and marketing
concerns to include low-input agriculture and irrigation, pest
management, hog farming, aquaculture and timber management. Projects and
special programs will continue to be implemented. The Division will
develop projects, designed to educate students and the general public of
the significance of the county’s agriculture and seafood industries.
