Mission Statement

" To exercise good judgment & implement programs which maintain all roads & bridges under its jurisdiction safe for public travel. "

On July 1, 1984, St. Mary's County assumed routine highway maintenance activities on all County roads.  Prior too that time the State Highway Administration performed maintenance of the roadways which were approved by the County Office of the Engineer.

Activities of this Division include snow removal, ice control, road debris removal, maintenance paving, road grass cutting, pothole and pavement patching, tree trimming, drainage resolution, shoulder maintenance, bridge repairs, pipe replacement, safety improvements and traffic signage on 1,374 County roadways encompassing approximately 1,194 lane miles.  To improve responsiveness to the citizens and for improved maintenance tracking, the County Highways Division has divided the County into four (4) Services Areas; North, South, Central, and West as shown on our Highway Index Map.
