safe, dependable and cost effective transportation to our
customers and mobility for all residents."
On April 20,
2000 the responsibilities of this Division were transferred
to the Department of Public Works by the Board of County
Commissioners. Prior to that time, all transportation
related services were performed by the Office of Central
Services.
In 2003, the
St. Mary's Transit System received the State of Maryland's
Best Fixed Route System Award for 2002 from the Transportation
Association of Maryland.
Activities in
this Division include management of the County's vehicle
fleet, operation of the STS Transit System, purchase/maintenance/replacement
of all vehicles and heavy constructions equipment, non-public
school bus transportation and school bus driver training,
grant administration, central mailroom and messenger services,
and administration of the Bus Driver Drug & Alcohol Testing
Program.
