The Department of Public Works & Transportation STS Transit
plans to team up this year for the 1st annual holiday Stuff-The-Bus
campaign. This is an opportunity for caring individuals, groups and businesses to help
stuff a bus literally, with canned goods and non-perishable items. Any non-perishable food
item is appreciated, but the following items are
URGENTLY
NEEDED: rice, tuna fish, cereals, canned meats, canned fruits, peanut
butter, canned vegetables, baby formula, diapers, dry milk, macaroni & cheese.
The canned goods,
diapers, formula, and other non-perishable goods will support the
work of St. Mary’s Caring, Helping Hands, Three Oaks Homeless
Shelter, Community Services, local food pantries such as St. Paul’s
Methodist Church, St. Mary’s County Employees Association and help
our volunteers and staff to minister to the needs of the homeless
and hungry in this community.
The Stuff-The-Bus program
began with a "kick-off" pilot project by the Board of County
Commissioners DPW&T at the Three Notch Theater in Lexington Park
between December 9-11, 2005. The success of this event led to
the establishment of an annual collection program held during
the months of April / May. The number of sponsors and volunteers
now includes the; County Commissioners, STS Transit System,
Health Department, Department of Human Services, volunteers from
Patuxent River NAS, Food Lion, Giant, McKays, several other food
stores, area churches, local schools and businesses
. Collections of canned goods and non-perishables also takes
place at designated County Governmental buildings. We
Thank You For Your Generosity !
Without such
generous people in our community, so many individuals and families
would go without. It is estimated that every day 375,000 people, 40
percent of whom are children , go hungry. If you miss the
opportunity to Stuff-The-Bus, we plane to have annual
events during the Spring and Fall each year, where we might also be
collecting clothing, blankets and toys.
