The Great Mills Swimming Pool provides opportunities for recreational, therapeutic, instructional and competitive swimming for all ages.  The 25 yard x 25 meter pool includes six lanes and has a “zero depth” entry for maximum accessibility.  The pool is covered with an air-inflated “bubble” from September until May to allow year round usage.  The facility’s bathhouse includes showers, lockers, restrooms and a lifeguard room.

The pool will close if lightning is observed; all swimmers will be asked to leave the water immediately. The pool will remain closed for 30 minutes after the last lightning strike has been observed.

Facts on Swimming Pool TemperatureIf you are interested in instructing classes or in a lifeguard position, please contact Gary Reed, Leisure Programs Coordinator, at 301-866-6560.

Everyone can benefit from exercising in the water. This class uses a combination of aerobic exercise routines to improve cardiovascular endurance and conditioning exercises to strengthen muscles and basic stretching to increase flexibility. It employs the natural isotonic resistance of water and requires minimal swimming ability. Aqua Aerobics is an excellent method of cross training, resistance training, burning calories, losing weight and reducing joint impact

WATER WALKING

Water Walking is a 30 minute Instructor led class that consists of creative walking and resistance training to help increase cardiovascular and muscular strength and flexibility while having fun and meeting new people.  Water Walking routines typically involve walking in water that is waist high or deeper while you swing your arms in the same manner you would during a walk on land.  Web gloves and water buoys will also be used.  The water provides more resistance as compared to air and helps reduce joint pain problems.  The buoyancy in water supports the weight of the body and reduces pressure on joints.

Water Walking can be used as a warm up or stretching session before an Aqua Aerobics Class.  It's a safe and effective way to increase your exercise time in the pool.

The use of water shoes is recommended.
