Voter Registration Information

To Register to Vote, a resident must complete a Voter Registration Form and return it to the Board of Elections office. There are several ways to obtain the form:

  • Call 301-475-7844 x1610 to request an application to be mailed to you

  • Visit the Board of Elections office at 41650 Tudor Hall Road, Leonardtown, MD 20650

  • Pick-up an application at the County Libraries, MVA, Post Offices

  • Download the form at Maryland Voter Registration Form - The computer being used must have the Adobe Acrobat Reader installed.

To be a registered voter in St. Mary's County, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Resident of the County

  • United States Citizen

  • At least 18 years of age on or before the next General Election

  • Not disqualified as outlined by Maryland State Law

The State and Local Election Officials provide training for individuals who want to volunteer to assist Maryland citizens with registering to vote. You may apply at the St. Mary's Board of Elections or the State Board of Election for Voter Registration Volunteer Training. For further training information please contact the St. Mary's Board of Elections at 301-475-7844 ext. 1610 or the State Board at 1-800-222-Vote.

Your request for an absentee ballot application must be received (not just mailed) by the deadline:

  • For the primary election, the deadline is Tuesday, September 7, 2010. Your request must be received by 8:00 pm if you mail or deliver the application or 11:59 pm if you fax or email it.
  • For the general election, the deadline is Tuesday, October 26, 2010. Your request must be received by 8:00 pm if you mail or deliver the application or 11:59 pm if you fax or email it.

DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF ABSENTEE BALLOTS

Any absentee ballot, whether mailed or hand delivered, is timely if it reaches the election office by 8 p.m. on Election Day.  An absentee ballot may not be faxed.

Any ballot received by mail is timely if it arrives by 4 p.m. on the Wednesday after Election Day, and if the U.S. Postal Service has affixed a postmark on the envelope verifying that the ballot was mailed before Election Day.  If the postmark is illegible, the voter's affidavit on the ballot envelope, indicating that the ballot was completed and mailed before Election Day, is sufficient.

DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF OVERSEAS BALLOTS

Any ballot received by mail from outside the United States is timely if it arrives:

  • By 10 a.m. on the second Wednesday after a Presidential General Election; or

  • By 4 p.m. on the second Friday after all other elections,

And if the U.S. Postal Service, an Army post office, a fleet post office, or the postal service of any other country has affixed a postmark on the envelope verifying that the ballot was mailed before Election Day.  If the postal service of the place from which the ballot was mailed does not provide a postmark, or if the postmark is illegible, the voter's affidavit on the ballot envelope, indicating that the ballot was completed and mailed before Election Day, is sufficient.
