How to use SM-Map (St. Mary’s Map) Election Polling Location Locator Mapping Application

SM-Map is an interactive map that will instruct you where your polling location is located. The Internet Browser Window is identical to any other application and works in the same way. On the Map Face itself are the mapping tool bar, the tool description, the map face, legend bar, and the layer information box. These 5 different parts are what work together to deliver you your information.

Parts of the Map Face

 

Internet Browser Window

This is a standard Internet Bowser Window. The buttons along the top of the window have the same functionality as in any other internet application.

Map Face

The Map Face is the map image itself. This is the work area where the interaction will be performed. Here is where you will point and click on the Geographic location to obtain information about a location in the County. In the upper right corner of the Map Face is the Overview Map window. This window remains at the same scale but gives you a red box that shows where you are located in the Map Face window.

Mapping Toolbar

 

The Mapping Toolbar contains all of the tools available to interact with the Map Face. In the lower left hand corner of the Browser window is the description of what Toolbar option is active.

Below is a description of the functionality of each of the available buttons.

Tool Bar Options

 

Legend/Layer List Button – This button toggles the Legend/Layers List on the right side of the mapping interface window.

Overview Map Button – This button toggles the Overview Map on and off.

 

Zoom In Button – This button Zooms In on the position clicked on

or the box dragged on the Map Face.

 

Zoom Out Button – This button Zooms Out on the position clicked on or the box dragged on the Map Face.

 

Zoom to Full Extent – This button Zooms to the full extent of the Map Face.

 

Previous Extent – This button Zooms to the last previous extent.

 

Pan – This button Pans the Map as the user drags the pointer across the Map Face.

 

Indentify – This button displays a list of attributes for a selected feature.

 

Print – This button Prints the map to the user’s default printer.

 

Zooming into your Polling Location

 

 

"Zoom In" on the area of the map where you live by clicking on the "Zoom In" Button in the tool bar and draw a box around where you want to locate.The map will zoom into where you draw your box.

 

 

Here you want to "click" on the Identify icon  and "click" in your Map Face on your location.  Your Election Precinct, Commissioner, School, Legislative Districts, Polling Location will appear in the Layer Information Box.

Layer\Legend Bar

 

The Layer\Legend Bar defines what Layers are being viewed on the Map Face. As you "Zoom In" or "Zoom Out" the Layer will appear and disappear at different scales. The more you "Zoom In", the more detailed the information becomes.

In this Layer\Legend Bar are two important parts of this tool, The Visible Check Box

is the button that controls if the layer is visible when the layer is presented on the Map Face, or if the layer is turned off and not visible.

The Active Theme Option Button determines which layer has attributes behind it and if the option button is on, you can "click" on the layer symbol to obtain the attribute information about that layer.

Anytime that these buttons are turned on
or off you must "click" on the
Refresh Map button to update the map.

 

Data View Window

In this section of the interface is where the Attribute data is displayed. As you "click" on one of the option buttons in the Layer\Legend Bar and Refresh the map, you can "click" on one of the highlighted fields on the Map Face to find the Polling Location for your neighborhood.

 

 

Printing a Map

 

"Click" on the Print Icon.

In the Data View Window the following message will appear.

In the text box you can title your Map and "click" Create Print Page
