Legal Assistance
The Department of Aging & Human Services contracts with the Legal Aid Bureau, Inc., to provide free legal services to St. Mary’s County residents age 60 and over. Cases are limited to: denial of public benefits, Social Security and SSI overpayments, advance directives, credit problems, landlord/tenant disputes, consumer problems, Medicare, Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income, food stamps, and subsidized housing. Appointments can be made by calling 301-475-4200, ext. 71064. Persons under the age of 60 can call the Legal Aid Bureau, Inc. directly at 301-884-5935.
Nursing Home and Assisted Living residents who require legal assistance may contact the Legal Aid Bureau, Inc. at 1-800-367-7563.
Seniors age 60 and over, who meet income guidelines can receive reduced legal fees for cases involving wills, powers of attorney, and deeds through the Sixty Plus Legal Program . Referrals to local attorneys can be made by calling 1-800-999-8904.
The Senior Legal Helpline is a free service available to seniors aged 60 and up who need answers to general legal questions. To speak to a licensed attorney, call 1-800-896-4213, Monday - Friday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Maryland Volunteer Lawyer Service links pro-bono attorneys with individuals who meet the program’s criteria. Service is provided at no charge with representation being offered in the areas of: adult guardianship, income tax disputes, bankruptcy chapter 7, simple divorce, estate administration, and may more.
The Maryland Attorney General’s Office is available to assist with cases of fraud and abuse, consumer complaints.
